Sunrise In Annapolis

I awoke at 3:30 a.m. and drove to Annapolis, Maryland to meet Elliot Stern, who owns and operates the Blue Ridge Photography Workshops.

We had a wonderful morning of shooting on a crisp, April Saturday with eight students who chose just one focal length lens to use on their cameras. For many, it was a challenge to be without a zoom lens, but the assignment offered photographers an opportunity to use their feet to zoom and provided them with the chance to really study their compositions instead of relying on the lens to do most of the work.

I loved this challenge. I grew up with only a 50 mm lens on my first film camera, and that’s the lens I chose for today. There were moments when I wished for more reach to capture that image I saw at a distance, but more often than not I was able to recompose the shot to capture something I’d not noticed until I was forced to think in a different way.

I downloaded my photos tonight but am too tired to really edit them. So, I chose a sunrise photo for today’s blog, and I hope to have enough keepers to post a small gallery tomorrow. It was a great day not only to photography a lovely city, but also to spend time with other people who share a passion for photography.
